Tabletop Easel vs Floor Easel: Which Should You Buy?
Share
Buy a tabletop easel if you paint sitting down, work on canvases up to about 12 inches, or have limited space. Buy a floor easel if you want to stand while you paint, work on larger canvases, or step back often to judge your work. Many painters end up owning both, and the tabletop is usually the better first purchase.
How the Two Types Differ
A tabletop easel sits on a desk or table and holds the canvas at an angle in front of you while you sit. A floor easel stands on its own legs, usually as a tripod, and holds the canvas at standing height. The type you need depends on the size you paint, how much room you have, and whether you prefer to sit or stand.
| Tabletop easel | Floor easel | |
|---|---|---|
| Painting position | Sitting at a table | Standing, or sitting on a tall stool |
| Canvas size | Small to medium | Small to large |
| Space needed | A corner of a desk | Floor space plus room to step back |
| Storage | Fits in a cupboard or on a shelf | Folds flat, needs a tall spot to lean against |
| Best for | Beginners, students, watercolor, small studies | Acrylic and oil on larger canvases, regular painters |
| Also used for | Displaying small artworks, photos and signs | Event signage, wedding boards, exhibitions |
When a Tabletop Easel Makes More Sense
Most beginners paint on small canvas boards at the dining table or a study desk. For that, a tabletop easel does everything you need. It lifts the canvas off the flat table, so you see your painting straight on instead of looking down at it at a slant. That alone fixes a lot of stretched, lopsided drawings.
It also suits small Indian apartments, where a floor easel standing in the living room is hard to justify. A tabletop easel comes out when you paint and goes back on the shelf when you are done.
There are two common styles:
- A-frame tabletop easels. A simple folding tripod that holds a small canvas or board. The ARTIOS 16 inch wooden easel is this style: pine wood, 16 inches high and 9 inches wide, with an adjustable tilt, and it folds flat without any assembly.
- Box easels. A tabletop easel built on top of a storage drawer. The ARTIOS Desk Box Easel is made from rubberwood, adjusts to four positions, holds canvases up to 11x14 inch, and has a two-compartment drawer that fits up to 24 standard paint tubes on one side and brushes on the other. If you paint in a shared space and have to pack up every time, the drawer is the main reason to choose it.
Tabletop easels are also the better pick for watercolor. Watercolor is usually painted at a low angle so the water does not run down the paper, and a desk setup makes that easy.
When a Floor Easel Makes More Sense
A floor easel is worth it once you start painting bigger. Anything above roughly 16x20 inches gets awkward on a desk: the top of the canvas is out of comfortable reach and a small easel can tip when you press on the edge.
Standing to paint changes how you work. You use your whole arm instead of your wrist, which gives looser, more confident strokes. You also step back more often, and stepping back is how you catch problems with proportion and value that you cannot see from twelve inches away.
Look for these features in a floor easel:
- Adjustable height, so it works whether you stand or sit on a stool.
- Adjustable tilt, for reducing glare and for painting at a slight lean.
- Maximum canvas size, checked against the largest canvas you plan to paint in the next year.
- Folding design, if the easel has to be put away between sessions.
The ARTIOS 5 feet wooden easel is made of pine wood, with adjustable height and tilt, and takes canvases up to 48 inches. It folds for storage and also works for event and wedding signage.
Stability Matters More Than Features
Whichever type you choose, the easel has to stay still when you paint. A wobbly easel makes every stroke harder, because the canvas moves back as you press. Before you start, set the legs fully open on a flat surface and push gently on the top corner of the canvas. If it rocks, adjust the legs or move it to firmer ground. On tiled floors, a small rubber pad under each foot stops the legs from sliding apart.
Also check that the canvas sits firmly in the holder. Small boards can slip if the clamp or ledge is set too loose. For tabletop easels, keep the heavier jars and palette on the table beside the easel rather than hanging anything off it.
Space Check Before You Buy
Before ordering a floor easel, stand where you plan to paint and check the space. You need room for the easel itself, room for a small table or trolley beside it for your palette, and at least two steps of clear floor behind you. You also want light falling on the canvas from the side, ideally from a window, without direct sun hitting it. If that spot does not exist in your home, a tabletop easel near a window will serve you better. There are more layout ideas in How to Set Up a Home Art Studio in India.
Match the Easel to the Canvas
Your easel choice is really a canvas size choice. If you work mainly on canvas boards in small sizes, a tabletop is enough. If you are moving to stretched canvas in larger sizes, plan for a floor easel. Canvas Boards vs Stretched Canvas explains the difference between the two surfaces.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which easel is better for a complete beginner?
A tabletop easel. Beginners usually paint small, sit down and need to pack up afterwards. Buy a floor easel once your canvases outgrow the desk.
Can I paint standing at a tabletop easel?
Only if you put it on a high counter. At a normal table height you will be bending over, which gets uncomfortable fast.
Can a floor easel be used sitting down?
Yes, if the height adjusts low enough. Many painters sit on a stool at a floor easel for detailed work and stand for the larger passages.
Do painting kits include an easel?
Many do. The ARTIOS painting kits include an easel along with brushes, paints, canvas boards and a palette. See How to Choose a Painting Kit for Beginners in India for what to look for.
